New Sportsman/Dragster Series (April 23, 2018)

Grand Bend Motorplex and Toronto Motorsports Park work together for Top Sportsman and Top Dragster competitors

Officials from Grand Bend Motorplex (GBM), Toronto Motorsports Park (TMP) and the Drag Syndicate (DS) announced the formation of the Pro Sportsman Dragster Series (PSDS) earlier today. This series will provide Top Sportsman & Top Dragster competitors a platform to race at multiple tracks, without conflicting dates, all while earning points towards a guaranteed points fund.

“For the past few years, TS/TD racers have been asking for more races in SW Ontario. I also think it’s important for everyone to work together, having one series between the two tracks, will ensure long-term stability and help grow these classes.” Uli Bieri, Toronto Motorsports Park.

For 2018, there will be six events, the first two of which at Toronto Motorsports Park for the Victoria Day Weekend Drags (May 18-20), followed by the Canadian Nitro Nationals (June 29-July 1). The remaining events will alternate between the two tracks with Grand Bend Motorplex hosting the Drag Syndicate (July 14-15), then TMP will host the Drag Syndicate (August 18-19). Labour Day Weekend will see the action back at GBM (August 31-September 2). The final event will return to TMP for the Drag Syndicate Season Finale (September 29-30).

“Being a part of this is very exciting, all of the TS/TD racers should be excited too. The tracks are doing exactly what everyone has been asking for – more events and no conflicting dates.” Steve Martin, Drag Syndicate.

Top Sportsman and Top Dragster entries will qualify and race in 2 separate 16 car qualified fields, the final will then be contested between the last dragster racing the last door car. All competitors will be earning points towards the 2018 Championship and at least $6,000 in cash prizes to be split amongst the top 10 points finishers.

“TS/TD racing is an important element of our big race weekends. We all want these classes to continue to succeed and grow, but they can only do that if there are enough events. This program is a win-win for everyone.” Paul Spriet, Grand Bend Motorplex.

The entry fees for the PSDS events will be $300 for the driver & car. Crew admission will vary depending on the event. Winning the event will pay $3,000, $1,500 to the runner-up, $750 to the semis, $500 to the quarters and $200 for winning the first round.

Track Preparation - 2018 Racing Season (April 4, 2018)

Toronto Motorsports Park is pleased to announce that Mike Vanni officially joins the TMP team working on Track Preparation/Maintenance. Mike comes to TMP with a long history of drag racing at Cayuga. His father Vince Vanni, was former track manager and part owner of the Cayuga Dragway during the mid to late 80’s. Mike has raced for 20 years at Cayuga. Race Director, Neale Armstrong tells us. “I have known Mike since he was just a kid, always putting in time at the track with his dad and asking questions. He has been a racer since he was old enough to drive, and will bring a fresh perspective to track prep. I look forward to working with him”

As any racer will tell you, track surface preparation is a crucial part of drag racing. Mike’s experience in drag racing and his passion for the sport are just a couple reasons he was selected. Mike Vanni officially takes his new position at TMP in the middle April. I am very excited to be a part of Toronto Motorsports Park this coming season and many more”, says Mike.

Uli Bieri, owner of Toronto Motorsports understands that there are many intricacies of track preparation and believes the person responsible for this job must respect and care about every aspect of getting the job done right. In addition to this, Uli believes that proper training is essential and has contracted Ralph Mabrier and Kane Daily, highly respected experts in track prep to work with and train Mike.

Ralph and Kane have been involved in Drag Racing for many years and bring with them a wealth of experience in track preparation. They started out working at their local track then decided to shift focus to concentrate strictly on track prep for major events, eventually branching out to many other venues. In 2016, they began working with Kurt Johnson at Total Venue Concepts, preparing tracks all over North America. Ralph was involved with TMP in 2017 for a few races, doing some prep after the season was underway, and will be returning this year with Kane in the middle of April, to concentrate on a complete TMP track surface overhaul and repair to some parts of the concrete, alongside Mike Vanni.

Uli is very pleased to have this exceptional team and looks forward to a great racing season.
